“A Minimalist Analysis of Focus and Interrogative Marker Construction in English and Dagbani”

Facilitator:
Li Tian (PhD)-Lecturer, Linguistics

School of Foreign Studies and Trade (SFST), HUAT

Moderator:
Lemuel Gbologah (PhD)
Director, SGRC-WA / SFST, HUAT

Date: Monday, 22nd December 2025
Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Venue: Industry-Building (SX301), HUAT

About the Event:

The study explores parametric variation between the two languages, highlighting how English relies mainly on movement-based mechanisms, while Dagbani employs particle-based strategies, particularly within the left periphery of clause structure. By integrating insights from syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, the presentation contributes to broader discussions on the syntax–pragmatics interface and the nature of functional features in Universal Grammar.

Target Audience:

Students, lecturers, researchers in linguistics, education, translation studies, and African studies.
